TENGO TALENTO: Jennyselt Galata of Yoruba Andabo & Sailen (Afro Cuban Folklore):

Jennyselt is a dancer of Afro-Cuban Folklore, who enjoys an international reputation as well as enormous prestige within Cuba itself. She is currently dancing with the group Yoruba Andabo, and is on the lookout for a successor with the talent and commitment necessary to carry the traditions of Afro-Cuban dance culture forward into the future. Jennyselt takes us to Juanelo (a part of Havana rarely seen by tourists), and a community project that works to cultivate the skills and ambitions of the next generation of dancers. Will she find a youngster there, to whom she can pass on her legacy?

TENGO TALENTO: Yrak of Doble Filo & Darwin of Golpe Seko (Cuban Hip Hop):

World renowned rapper Yrak Saens (one half of the group Doble Filo, and a pioneer of Cuban Rap) takes to the streets to look for the next generation in Cuban Hip Hop. Travel with him, on the road from Havana to Santiago in his search for up and coming stars.

TENGO TALENTO: Julio Padrón and El Niño Jesus (Cuban Jazz):

Julito Padrón, one of the most outstanding trumpeters in Cuba, introduces us to a young man who, at only 15 years of age, is the master of a spectacular sound that promises to propel him to the heights of fame.

Pastor’s wife has fallen desperately ill, and taken to her bed. He decides to go, in secret, to sell his beloved tiple (a musical instrument) in order to buy medicine for her. Afterwards, he arrives back home, heartbroken, only to find his wife’s condition has improved a little – if only he would come and play her a song on the tiple – she pleads. There’s nothing else for it… he will have to go and try to get it back again!

Bibi is a widow who lives alone in a small apartment, with just her cat for company. One day, though, she is persuaded to emerge from her isolation to come to Juliet’s aid. The two of them end up developing a poignant relationship based upon their shared loneliness, and a mutual dread of approaching death. A stark and deceptively simple tale, beautifully told.

Perfect Storm is a video exploration of sensuality and emotion. The technique of translating word to image is used in this video poem, written by Eduardo Estala Rojas, to uncover the true nature of identity, and what can be achieved through self-belief.

A beautifully crafted short about a day in the life of a Colombian marketplace. Vélez and Sarmiento interweave an original musical score with vibrant documentary footage to create a compelling and dynamic montage. Exhilarating and hypnotic by turns, a cinematic tour de force.

With Benjamin as our guide, we explore the enchanting, hidden world of the Mexican jungle through the eyes of an innocent child. In the course of the adventure, we learn the creation myth of Paal – The Child, protector of wild places. Muller and Villafuerte have created a charming, uplifting film that invites us to respect our natural surroundings, as Benjamin does, and to see beauty in the simplicity of his gaze.

Set in the Colombian jungle, this short film is a brutal critique of “ethnographic” film. In a seemingly formulaic documentary about an indigenous tribe, the conventions are manipulated to reveal the tensions underlying the relationship between subjects and filmmakers, in a style that transcends mere clever self-reflexiveness. Challenging and spiky viewing, indeed.

Maria is a Spanish old lady suffering from Alzheimer, who keeps returning to her childhood during the Spanish civil war. Rosa, as a young Colombian, has lived through war. When she starts taking care of Maria, it is the beginning of a special relationship.

Augustín Banchero’s short drama is a beautifully crafted tale of one man’s attempt to confront the memories that have marred his life as an adult. Pablo’s return visit to his childhood home, and the increasingly sinister ‘game’ he plays with his cousin, are unfolded through a series of masterly visual images.
